How can the Alexander Technique help back pain & sciatica?

Back pain

For many the root cause of back pain and sciatica is due to poor postural habits and misalignment of the body.

When your body isn't in alignment, it has to work extra hard. This leads to the large superficial muscles having to do the work to keep you upright, resulting in discomfort, pain and unnecessary tension in the back.

With poor use the spine becomes compressed which causes a lack of mobility and stiffness, leading to back pain. Through the Alexander Technique you can rediscover how your body naturally aligns and reestablish the head, neck and back relationship.

With gentle hands on guidance, the spine can start to lengthen and decompress, allowing you to regain natural posture and reduce undue tensions and stress in the body. This helps to reduce pain, improves overall well-being and increases energy levels as the body does not have to work so hard to keep you upright!

Sciatica

In the case of sciatica, the compression of the vertebrae in the lower back causes nerves to become impinged resulting in pain which typically radiates down one or both legs. The Alexander Technique can help relieve pressure by helping to release the vertebrae bones in the spine and ultimately reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve.
